i put shells from the beach in my fish's bowl will it hurt him?

The bowl will definitely hurt your fish. Shells are ok to add if they have been properly cleaned to remove any possibly harmful parasites, remaining animal debris and/or parasites. Shells will also increase the pH of your water. However, since your fish is in a bowl, you'll need to change at least 50% of the water on a daily basis to prevent your fish from dying of ammonia toxicity. All fish require filtered tanks and this includes betta fish.

It won't hurt them if you watch your Ph levels and everything. However you should med the tank because unless you boiled them they could carry diseases. It may be best to take them out until you can go to your local fish store and talk to them about it. They may suggest not using it at all due to the ph problems. It's extra work to keep them though.
