The last time I fished near Ogden Point was about 4 yrs ago. I currently fish North Vancouver island around the Queen Charlott islands, Johnstone Strait, Kelsey Bay, Tahsis, and Tofino areas as a guide. There are 5 different species of salmon off of Vancouver Island. You can fish Ogden Point for Chinook right now if you want to. Actually this is supposed to be our four year return on Chinook for most of the major rivers on the North island. I have been catching some nice Chinook but haven't run by any large schools gathering together with my sonar yet. The Chinook have been ranging from 6lb to a nice 33lber caught last week. Most of em are averaging about 12-15lbs though. We are running the downriggers down fishing in depths from 75ft down to 150ft. I run 2 downriggers at a time adjusting the depths of fishing to what my fishfinder/sonar is telling me. The salmon rig itself can be made up several ways. We always use a flasher going for salmon at these depths. Hot pink and green flashers seem to be working ok for us right now, but I have found that full mirror flashers work better for me in the late summer or getting Sockeye and Coho salmon. We have been getting most of our catches trolling with whole herring and sardines about 2ft behind the flasher. We caught the big Tyee(Chinook) last week on a cut plug of herring. Chartruese and hot pink colored hootchies have caught a few as well. We have been getting alot more bites with herring for our bait in the water though. Feel free to email me for more info if needed. 40yr exp |
