catching carp with peanut butter roll?

me and my dad went fishing today, for catfish and carp. We were just gonna fish with worms but, we found a piece of peanut butter roll rolled up in plastic. He put it on his hook and threw it out and BOOM!!! a 13 inch common carp. He just had that one piece, but he tossed it out again and hooked another fish but, it got off. Anyone ever used this?
we also caught a 7 inch bullhead catfish
