why do carp stop feeding when it comes winter? and how long do they not feed

for? what bait to use in winter? in the dam we used to get loads of bites and carp...but now its become cooler... now i don't get a single bite all day! All the other people who fish there are the same, its not just me being rubbish when will this change back to what it used to be like?
