I grew up fishing for carp and they are a fun fish to hook up with. I used a slip rig that is really simple to set up. You simply slide your line through the weight, attach a swivel for the stop and your hook and leader to the swivel. Bait up and cast out. The line should pull freely through the weight and the swivel will keep the twist out of your line. Leave some slack in your line when you set the rod on the holder, bend a small twig in half and put the inverted V on your slack line. When you get that bite it'll jump up and down until it flies off the line. Or you can just go buy a commercially made alarm and follow the instructions. Hey, have a great time and catch a bunch!

the only alarm i use is the tug on the line....
the rigs i use are:
1: main line to a swivel, same test to another, approx. 6 to 8 inches, with a 1 to 3 oz. egg or pyramid weight, another swivel, same test line to a circle hook. reel the line up until it gets tight, use the bait runner or loosen your drag, let the fish hook itself on the sinker...
2: main line to a swivel, above the swivel, put a 1 to 3 oz sinker, egg or pyramid, then a plastic bead, as a shock absorber, same test line from swivel to a circle hook.

cast both the same..
