three cory catfish? just one.
well gosh, now i need a tiebreaker.

I think it's worth a try. Some bettas don't like the flashiness of the neons though so have a backup tank just in case And lots of coverage (plants and the like) for all the fish. And that the tank is big enough for him to have his space.
