Basic fishing needs - trout & catfish?

I'm planning a fishing trip for my family, as my daughter has been asking to go for months. It's become obvious that if its going to happen, I'm going to have to put it together. My husband is the avid fisher, but he mostly does surf fishing. We have local lakes down the street they stock with catfish, trout, bluegill. We have poles, but what other equipment should I get? (floats, weights, etc?)
