african cichlids should only be kept with other africans and catfish indeginous to the same lakes, or at least tolerant of the same water conditions. firemouths and convicts are central american species that require soft water and low pH, in addition to a carnivorous diet. african cichlids, like the labs and the "white" cichlid (image search albino socolofi) and the "rainbow cichlid" (try image searching red zebra and kenyi) need hard, alkaline water with a high pH. they are also vegetarians primarily and too much meat protein will cause a condition called malawi bloat and kill them. the tetras will not last long, either.
convicts will also breed and become HIGHLY aggressive, killing anything that they see as a threat to their young. if they breed, either they or their fry (once matured) will kill off your other fish. |
