Does anyone know a cold water fish which looks like catfish?

I am trying to establish whether the 2 fish I bought from the petshop are bristlenose or something else? The pet shop claims its a cold water fish named Hong Kong something.. It looks very much like a bristlenose but when I asked they said this fish is more of a goby rather than a catfish. Both fish died after 2 weeks of living in a gold fish populated fish tank and I am trying to figure out why... Can you help? Thanks.
