how to fish catfish?Anmd where is a good place to fish catfish in california?

I've never been fishing but next week will be my first time fishing. One fish that I would like to fish for is catfish. I have no idea what bait but I heard macro is good and nightcrawlers. The thing is that what size hook is good for catfish and hot to set everything up. I tried asking people on a trip I took on lake success but they didnt want to tell me. So anything will help
I'm going to be fishing in a lake of about 1,400 acres and im just looking to catch less than a 10 pound catfish

Catfish can mean anything from a 4oz bullhead up to 80 pounds or more.Be more specific about what size you're trying to catch and what size pond/lake you'll be fishing at.
