dont seem to last long? I need a fish to keep the bottom clean. I have 6 small red tetras and 1 platty in a 29 gal. tank. what else could I put in with them that is easy to take care of. I'm new at this.

Try a pair of clown loaches, they do the job great. Plus, they are really hardy and get along with everything.
