...and reel.? The fish I am after are quite large, probably in the range of 20 to 30 pounds, species unknown, as I have not landed any yet. I have used 30lb line and have been taken to the cleaners.

I would try using at least a three foot wire leader on forty pound dacron.It"s pre-stretched and you feel the slightest nible.This way you"ll be able to get a better hook set.Good luck and keep on fishing.
