Default Can you use fresh water fish for " Fish and Chips " ?

Hi,

Just wondering if it's possible to use a fresh water fish as a substitute for the usual salt water varieties ? I live in Asia and access to Cod, Haddock, Halibut etc is difficult and very expensive.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

"fish and chips" is just a meal combination of fish coated in btter and fried and served with potato slices. Both are deep fried in oil.
So any fish that can be coated will do fine.

They will taste even better if wrapped up in newspaper after being taken out of the oil and drained.

However the real deal can only be got in England. It has the flavour of their history as well!!

Traditional British fish and chips are always made with white-fleshed fish like cod, haddock and plaice. NEVER oily fish (like salmon, tuna etc ...) . What sort of fresh water fish are native to where you live? If they're part of the white fish group, you should be OK.

I live in the UK, so I've eaten plenty of fish and chips in my time!

I am a former chef and here in Canada we use lake fish like perch, trout, farmed salmon, pike and pickereal, all are very mild some boney.

We still use cod, haddock, halibut and the most popular is Alaskan Pollack, it is mild and flat like sole, not strong in flavour, and relativley cheap.
