When I was a child, we had shallow octagonal glass bowls for our turtles.....my mother put sand in the bottom of the bowl, then put in some flat rocks for them to crawl onto, and some moss which we got in the woods, then she put some little water in the bottom of the bowl so the turtles could swim around....they really liked it

For fish: you could have two different goldfish bowls with nice goldfish ~ in one bowl put sand in the bottom and some aquarium plants & some little rocks to hide behind from the pet store .... and in the other, put just sand and no plants or rocks.......hopefully, you can see how much happier the fish are in the one with the plants & rocks....and be sure to get enough plants & rocks for the bowl without them, so that when you take home the equipment for your project, those fish will be happy too

A solar powered fish tank would be neato. Use a simple solar cell, 3'x1' to run the pump and lights, have a 6v DC battery backup. Or a 12v.
It is mixing many sciences with common daily stuff.

If you are surrounded by different bodies of fresh water, take a sample of each in fish bowls, place fresh water fish in each bowl and see how the fish fare to determine the most habitable body of water.

You can run an experiment to determine the effects of Alka-Seltzer on fish.
