A snail has appeared in my fish tank,?

since getting the tank 2 months ago I have emptied & cleaned it twice.I keep it in my bedroom no where near a window. how on earth did this unexpected visitor get into the tank & can it do my fish any damage?It is getting bigger but started of about the size of a grain of rice. Its got a white bodie & a brown shell.
