My salt water fish tank is growing brown stuff! How do I get rid of it?

I have had my salt water tank for about a month and now it is starting to grow brown stuff and I have no idea what it is! How do I get rid of this nasty stuff?
I have had my salt water tank for about a month and now it is starting to grow brown stuff and I have no idea what it is! How do I get rid of this nasty stuff? My local pet store (that does not sell salt water fish) said that I should leave it alone, but I don't think that is true.
