Default Cold or Warm water tank/fish?

We have a 10 gallon starter tank. We're getting ready to set it up to cycle, but we aren't sure if we want to do a warm or cold water tank. Which do you prefer and why? What kind of fish would you put in each to make a nice little 10 gallon community?
