fly fishing leader!!! help!?

ok i just got my fly fishing rod in the mail. im new at fly fishing and i noticed attached to the yellow thick line there is a 7ft clear line (leader) i live in the northeast and i am going to fly fish in the Delaware and other streams for trout. i was wondering if i should snip/trim or cut the leader to a certain length? my pole is 8ft long with 6lb string or something? i need help please!!!
