When does ice fishing start in Minnesota?

I am writing a book, and part of the story involves an ice fishing trip in Minnesota, but I need to know if early to mid December is too early to ice fish. Living in Florida, I'm not that familiar with the fishing seasons up there. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
