when fish breathe their gills suck in water and filter out the oxygen. its the same way with us but instead of breathing in water and getting oxygen we breathe in oxygen + what ever else is in the air and breath out carbon dioxide. hope that helps.

If there's ice in the lake, the water is cold. At cooler temperatures, fish become less active, as thier metabolism is temperature reliant. Since their metabolism is considerably slower, they don't need nearly as much oxygen. Also, at cooler temperatures, water can hold more oxygen, so any opening to the surface will allow a fair bit of oxygen into the water.
