Can I use any rocks from the garden in my tropical fish tank?

I have asked this question to my local fish shop, the answer was no you need special rocks, which he tried to sell to me.
these rocks (lava rocks i think) are very expenisive

Sure you can.As long as they have had a good wash and soaked in cold
water.I use them and some from the beach with shells.I also got the wood
in my tanks from the beach.Pet shops rip you off on these items.You can
also use dandelion and other wild plants for greenery.Just be sure all have
been given a good wash and a few days soaking in cold water.

If it is a SALTWATER tank, then no....you need more specalized rocks.

If it is a FRESHWATER tank.....then yes...you can use rocks from the outdoors. HOWEVER.......you need to make sure they are very clean. My suggestion to you would be to (and this is going to sound funny)....but put them in the dishwasher (if they are BIG enough to stay on the rack during the wash cycle. Once they come out of the dishwasher, rinse, rinse, rinse them.....and when you think you FOR SURE have all the soap off of them.....rinse them one more time...just to make sure you do!!!
