there are at least 1500 known species of reef safe fish. some are rare and others are regularly available through pet/fish suppliers. if you are even considering setting up a reef tank you will want to do a LOT of research. but as a general rule, fish like tangs (surgeonfish), damsels and clownfish, wrasses, blennies, chromis, dragonettes, rabbitfishes, and some varieties of angelfish are common popular choices. however, all fishes personalities and specific health and feeding requirements vary and research will be essential when introducing new specimens. you will want to start by introducing the less territorial, less dominant species and once they are established you can slowly introduce more aggressive species with the most aggressive species of the bunch being added last.

We had a tank a while ago with coral and live rock, and we went to a specialty store that specialized in marine aquariums. Our tank had a yellow tang, a clown fish (with anenome), a shrimp and a trigger fish and they all seemed fine with the coral.

If you can, find a place that specializes in salt-water tanks. It's worth talking to real experts abou them.

I hope this helps!

well this is a very general question.... but there are things you can and cant have together in your tank...depending on tank size.

for example, you can not have a saddleback butterfly fish with any anemones, for the butterfly fish will eat anemones.

triggerfish should not be put in with a reef tank smaller than 100 gallons... he will eat almost any coral you put in there with him.

2 different kinds of clownfish can not be in a tank less than 30 gallons... its just too small and clownfish are too territorial.

Things that go well together would be like a bubble tip anemone, and a true percula clown.

anyways if you want a more thorough answer, try asking a little more specific of what you want to know
